A growing number of lawmakers want to treat Apple's App Store like essential infrastructure that needs government oversight. Senators Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee, and Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut, are among those backing legislation to change how Apple operates its app marketplace.

The debate centers on Apple's tight control over iPhone apps. Unlike Android phones, iPhones can only download apps through Apple's App Store. Apple also takes a cut of up to 30% from app sales and subscriptions, which critics say gets passed on to consumers as higher prices.

Tech experts argue Apple has become essential infrastructure for mobile software, similar to how utilities provide electricity or water. One analysis noted Apple charges developers based on revenue rather than simply providing access, creating tension with app makers.

The proposed legislation would let developers communicate directly with customers about lower prices available outside app stores. It would also potentially allow alternative app stores on iPhones.

Apple defenders compare the situation to buying a power tool that only works with the manufacturer's batteries. They argue allowing third-party app stores isn't essential for iPhones to function and could create security risks.
