Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman Reflects on Mission and Late Wife's Support

Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman opened up about his historic mission to the moon and the personal journey that brought him there. The veteran astronaut will lead the first crewed lunar mission in more than five decades.

Wiseman described the scientific importance of their work, calling it "probably the most critical lunar observations for our geology team." Despite the intense focus required, he said the four-person crew took time to share maple cookies brought by crew member Jeremy and spent "three or four minutes" taking in the moment.

In a deeply personal reflection, Wiseman spoke about his late wife's unwavering support throughout his NASA career. "When everything else is gone, it's family," he said, highlighting how her belief in him shaped his path to commanding this mission.

Wiseman wasn't initially selected for early Artemis missions but maintained what colleagues described as a "team unity mentality." He consistently supported the idea that all active astronauts should remain eligible for Artemis missions, demonstrating the collaborative spirit that eventually led to his selection as commander.

The Artemis II mission represents NASA's ambitious plan to return humans to the moon and eventually establish a permanent lunar base.
