Artemis II Crew Enters Day 6 of Historic Moon Flyby Mission
Four astronauts aboard NASA's Artemis II mission are in their sixth day of a historic trip around the Moon. The crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
NASA's Artemis II crew is making history as they continue their journey around the Moon in the Orion spacecraft. The four-person team launched on April 1, 2026, for what's planned as a 10-day mission.
The astronauts have been busy testing spacesuits and preparing for their closest approach to the Moon. They're expected to travel a total of 695,081 miles before splashing down off the coast of San Diego.
This marks the first crewed lunar mission since Apollo 17 in 1972. Unlike the Apollo missions, Artemis II won't land on the Moon but will fly around it to test the Orion spacecraft and life support systems.
The mission is a key step in NASA's plan to return astronauts to the Moon's surface. Future Artemis missions aim to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon and eventually send crews to Mars.
This is the first time humans have flown around the Moon since the Apollo missions ended in 1972. The mission tests technology that will eventually land astronauts back on the Moon's surface.
The crew will complete their lunar flyby and return to Earth for splashdown off San Diego in the coming days.
