More than three dozen Democrats in Congress called for President Trump's removal from office Tuesday after he threatened to destroy "a whole civilization" in Iran. The lawmakers want to use impeachment or the 25th Amendment, which allows removal of presidents deemed mentally unfit.
The calls came ahead of an 8 p.m. Tuesday deadline Trump set for Iran to cut a deal and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. More than a quarter of all congressional Democrats questioned Trump's mental fitness for the presidency after his threats.
The 25th Amendment has never been used to remove a president. It requires the vice president and a majority of cabinet members to declare the president unable to do the job. Congress would then vote on removal.
Most congressional Republicans have not made public comments about Trump's Iran threats. Congress is currently on a scheduled recess, but Democrats continued calling for action even after Trump later announced a ceasefire.
This is the strongest push yet to remove a sitting president over foreign policy threats. If successful, it would make Trump the first president removed by the 25th Amendment, which was designed for cases where presidents can't do their job.
Watch for more Democrats to join removal calls and whether Republicans respond to Trump's Iran threats.
