Ford Recalls 1.74 Million Vehicles Over Rearview Camera Software Problems

Ford Motor Company is recalling nearly 1.74 million vehicles across the United States due to software glitches that can cause rearview camera displays to suddenly go black, federal safety officials announced this week.

The recall covers some of Ford's best-selling vehicles from 2021 through 2026, including the F-150 pickup truck, F-250 Super Duty, Lincoln Navigator, Ford Expedition, Maverick, and some Ranger and E-Transit models. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published the recall notices after determining the camera failures pose a safety risk.

The software problem can cause the rearview display screen to show a blank or black image when drivers shift into reverse, eliminating their ability to see behind the vehicle. This creates a major blind spot that could lead to accidents, especially in parking lots or driveways where pedestrians might be present.

This recall highlights growing challenges in the auto industry as vehicles become more complex. Modern cars and trucks now contain over 100 million lines of computer code, and Ford has experienced notably high recall rates relative to its production volume in recent years.

Ford has not yet announced when the recall will begin or how the company plans to fix the software issue.
