Free Universal Construction Kit Connects Lego, K'NEX and Other Building Toys
Artists Golan Levin and Shawn Sims created a set of 80 adapter bricks that let kids connect Lego blocks to K'NEX pieces and eight other popular building toy brands. The Free Universal Construction Kit breaks down the walls between toy companies that normally keep their products separate.

The Free Universal Construction Kit tackles a problem many parents know well: building toys from different companies don't work together. Lego won't connect to K'NEX, and neither works with Lincoln Logs or Tinkertoys.
Golan Levin and Shawn Sims at Carnegie Mellon University's STUDIO for Creative Inquiry developed nearly 80 different adapter pieces that bridge these gaps. The adapters let any toy piece connect to any other, opening up new building possibilities.
The creators call their project a "grassroots interoperability remedy" that provides a public service companies won't offer themselves. Toy companies keep their connection systems proprietary to encourage customers to buy more products within the same brand.
The adapter designs are available as free downloads, meaning anyone with a 3D printer can make their own set. This approach challenges the business model of keeping toy ecosystems separate and closed off from competitors.
Parents often buy different building toy brands that can't work together, limiting what kids can build. This kit solves that problem by making all the pieces compatible. It also challenges how companies create closed systems to lock customers into buying only their products.
The adapter designs remain available for free download and 3D printing.
