George Russell says he'd understand if Max Verstappen quits F1
Mercedes driver George Russell said he would understand if four-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen decides to quit the sport. Verstappen recently expressed doubts about his future in F1 because he's unhappy with current racing rules.
George Russell says he wouldn't blame Max Verstappen for leaving Formula 1 after the four-time champion hinted he might quit the sport.
Verstappen has been vocal about his unhappiness with F1's current rules and regulations. Russell believes the Dutch driver's frustration comes from Red Bull's struggles this season, which have made their cars less competitive.
The Mercedes driver thinks Verstappen's interest in other racing series like endurance sports car racing makes sense. Russell said there's "not really much more for him to achieve" in F1 after winning four world titles.
"My goal now is to become a Formula 1 world champion," Russell explained. "If I had four of them under my belt, I'd probably be doing the same."
Still, Russell doesn't want to see Verstappen go. He said it would be "natural" for any driver to get tired when their team isn't winning races like they used to. But Russell also noted that "F1 is bigger than any driver," suggesting the sport would survive even without its current biggest star.
Verstappen is F1's biggest star and current champion. If he leaves, it would be like LeBron James walking away from basketball in his prime. It shows how even top drivers are frustrated with how the sport is run today.
