Google Gemini AI replaces Assistant in 4 million GM cars with Android Automotive

Google is upgrading the AI brain in millions of GM cars by replacing Google Assistant with its more advanced Gemini AI system. The change affects 4 million GM vehicles that come with Android Automotive, which Google calls "Google built-in."

Gemini brings conversational AI to car dashboards, meaning drivers can have back-and-forth conversations with their car's computer instead of just asking single questions. The AI can understand context and follow up on previous requests, making it work more like talking to a person.

This rollout follows Google's recent introduction of Gemini to Android Auto, which works when you plug your phone into your car. Android Automotive is different - it's built directly into the car's system and doesn't need a phone connection.

Google first announced plans to bring Gemini to cars earlier this year, promising it would arrive "in the coming months" and "this fall." The company says Android Auto now works in nearly 250 million compatible vehicles worldwide, making this one of the biggest AI upgrades in automotive history.

The upgrade changes how drivers interact with their car's infotainment system for navigation, music, calls, and other features. Instead of memorizing specific voice commands, drivers can speak more naturally to get what they need.
