Google Releases Gemma 4 Open AI Models With Apache 2.0 License
Google released Gemma 4, a new family of open AI models available in four different sizes. The company switched to an Apache 2.0 license, giving developers more freedom to modify the models compared to previous versions.
Google announced Gemma 4, marking the first major update to the company's open AI models in a year. The new family includes four different sizes: Effective 2B, Effective 4B, 26B Mixture of Experts, and 31B Dense models.
The biggest change is Google's switch from its own Gemma license to the industry-standard Apache 2.0 license. This change removes many restrictions and gives developers much greater freedom to modify, distribute, and commercialize applications built with these AI models.
The Gemma 4 models are built off Google's Gemini 3 technology and designed to complement the company's premium Gemini models. These open models allow smaller companies and independent developers to access advanced AI capabilities without paying for expensive cloud services.
Google's move reflects growing competition in the open AI model space, where companies like Meta and others are also releasing free alternatives to expensive proprietary AI systems.
This gives developers and businesses easier access to powerful AI technology they can customize for their own apps and services. The new license removes restrictions that previously limited how people could use Google's AI models.
Developers can now download and start using the Gemma 4 models. Watch for new apps and services built with this technology.
