Gunman Killed, 2 Captured After Shootout Near Israeli Consulate in Istanbul
Three gunmen opened fire on police outside the Israeli Consulate in Istanbul on Tuesday, sparking a deadly shootout. One attacker was killed and two others were captured with injuries.
Three armed men attacked police officers stationed outside a building housing the Israeli Consulate in Istanbul on Tuesday morning, Turkish officials confirmed.
The gunmen opened fire on police in front of the Yapi Kredi Plaza in northern Istanbul. Police immediately returned fire, leading to an intense shootout in the busy district.
One attacker was killed during the gunfight. The two other gunmen were wounded and captured by police, according to Istanbul Governor Mustafa Ciftci.
Two police officers were also injured in the exchange of gunfire. Turkish authorities said they have identified all three attackers but have not released their names or possible motives.
The Israeli Consulate is housed in the same building where the attack occurred. No consulate staff were reported injured in the incident.
Turkish security forces quickly secured the area and launched an investigation into the attack.
