Harry Styles is donating £1 from every ticket sold on his UK tour dates to support struggling music venues and artists. The donations go through a partnership with LIVE Trust, an organization that helps grassroots music venues.
The money helps fund a £125,000 program that reduces tour budget shortfalls for UK artists. Applications for the funding opened in March, giving smaller bands financial help to go on tour without losing money.
"In order to break even, you have to make a lot of sacrifices for your wellbeing and comfort," says Emma Tovell, bassist for the band Brown Horse. She explains that most small bands accept financial struggles as part of the music business.
Tour costs have risen sharply in recent years, making it nearly impossible for new artists to tour without losing money. Small venues that host these acts are also struggling to stay open. When venues close, emerging artists lose crucial spaces to perform and build audiences.
Small music venues are where new bands get their start, but many are closing because touring costs have skyrocketed. When these venues disappear, fans lose places to discover new music and artists lose places to build their careers.
More artists may follow Styles' model of sharing tour profits with smaller venues and musicians.
