Hasan Piker Tests Political Power as Democrats Split Over Twitch Streamer

Hasan Piker, one of Twitch's biggest political streamers, is moving from his computer screen to the campaign trail for 2026 Democratic races. He's supporting progressive candidate Abdul El Sayed in Michigan's Senate race.

Piker usually interviews candidates on his stream rather than campaign for them in person. This marks a bigger step into traditional politics for the streamer who has millions of followers.

But Piker's involvement is splitting Democrats. The centrist think tank Third Way wrote in the Wall Street Journal that Democrats should break ties with Piker. They called him antisemitic and pointed to his past comment that America "deserved" the September 11 attacks, though he later apologized.

Progressive Democrats see Piker differently. They believe his huge young audience is worth the controversy. El Sayed has refused to distance himself from Piker despite pressure from critics.

The debate reflects a bigger challenge for Democrats: how to reach younger voters who get news from social media without embracing figures who make controversial statements.
