NFL Draft Prospects Need Right Hand Size, Wingspan to Get Picked High
NFL teams now judge draft prospects on body measurements like hand size and wingspan just as much as their game performance. Players need specific physical measurements along with good 40-yard dash times to get picked early in the draft.

NFL teams are putting huge weight on body measurements when picking players in the draft. Prospects must have the right hand size, wingspan, arm length and 40-yard dash speed to be considered for top selections.
The measurements happen at the NFL Combine, where teams check height, weight, arm length, wingspan and hand size along with the famous drill results. For most fans, these numbers seem less important than how fast a player runs or how well they perform drills.
But teams use these measurements differently for each position. For pass rushers, arm length matters more than wingspan because longer arms help them keep offensive linemen's hands off their bodies. One recent prospect, Gabriel, measured 71 6/8 inches in wingspan, 30-inch arm length, and 9-inch hands.
The measurements could determine when a player gets drafted and how much money they make. Results in arm length, wingspan, hand size, height and weight all affect a prospect's draft position, even if they played great in college.
These measurements can make or break a player's pro career before they even get a chance to play. A talented college player might drop in the draft just because their hands are too small or arms too short.
The 2025 NFL Draft will show how much these measurements affect where top prospects get picked.
