Pakistan Mediates US-Iran Ceasefire With China's Backing
Pakistan successfully helped broker a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, with China serving as the main guarantor of the agreement. China played the key role behind the scenes, backing Pakistan's efforts and serving as the guarantor of the ceasefire agreement. Pakistani officials traveled to China last week to meet with Foreign Minister Wang Yi before finalizing the deal.
"This is the first time Pakistan has simultaneously managed active conflict mediation between two adversaries under ongoing military escalation without direct contact between them," said analyst Ahmad.
Pakistan was uniquely positioned to help because it maintains relationships with both Washington and Tehran. "We were the mediator, not the guarantor," explained one Pakistani official, crediting China with ensuring both sides would honor the agreement.
The breakthrough comes as Pakistan seeks to rebuild its international standing and prove its value as a diplomatic partner. Weekend talks are planned to extend the ceasefire into a longer-term solution.
This ceasefire could prevent a larger war in the Middle East that would spike oil prices and disrupt global trade. Pakistan's success shows how smaller countries can play crucial roles in preventing conflicts that affect everyone's daily life through higher gas and food costs.
Pakistan will host talks this weekend to try extending the two-week ceasefire into a permanent peace agreement.
