Pope Leo XIV tells Angola to 'build hope' during massive Africa tour Mass
Pope Leo XIV held a massive outdoor Mass in Angola and urged the country to 'build hope' and move beyond divisions from its war-torn past. The Pope addressed thousands of people as part of his ongoing Africa tour.

Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful message of hope to thousands of Angolans during a massive open-air Mass in Luanda on April 18. The Pope urged the country to move beyond the 'divisions' created by decades of civil war that ended in 2002.
During his speech, Pope Leo called on Angola's leaders to 'remove the obstacles to integral human development.' He spoke directly about poverty and resource exploitation in a country rich with oil and diamonds but where many citizens struggle economically.
The Angola visit is the third stop on Pope Leo's Africa tour. Earlier that day, he celebrated a farewell Mass in Cameroon's capital Yaounde, where he urged people not to lose hope despite ongoing challenges in that Central African nation.
The Pope criticized what he called 'despots' who exploit natural resources while making false promises to their people. His message focused on choosing the common good over exploitative interests and preserving hope for the future.
Angola is rich in oil and diamonds but many citizens live in poverty. The Pope's message targets corruption and exploitation that keeps resources from helping ordinary people build better lives.
Pope Leo XIV will continue his Africa tour with additional stops planned across the continent.
