Raw Farm, the largest distributor of raw milk cheese in the United States, voluntarily recalled its cheddar cheese products after a multistate E. coli outbreak sickened 9 people. The California dairy company issued the recall "under protest," maintaining that its products did not cause the illnesses.
The Food and Drug Administration has not issued a formal recall but sent warning letters telling customers to avoid Raw Farm products bought on or after January 4. The agency is investigating the outbreak that has affected people in three states.
Raw Farm says its own tests on the cheese came back negative for harmful bacteria, including E. coli. The company denies that its products caused the outbreak but agreed to the voluntary recall to "chart a path forward" with health officials.
The recall is limited only to Raw Farm-brand cheddar cheese. No other Raw Farm products are being recalled at this time. E. coli infections can cause severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting, and can be life-threatening for young children, elderly people, and those with weak immune systems.
E. coli can cause serious illness and even death, especially in children and elderly people. If you bought Raw Farm cheddar cheese after January 4, health officials say don't eat it and throw it away.
