Rep. Donald Norcross Gets Emotional About Near-Death Experience on Capitol Hill

Rep. Donald Norcross broke down when asked about the medical emergency that almost killed him last year. The New Jersey congressman was walking on Capitol Hill when a reporter named Charlie stopped him to ask about his near-death experience.

The health crisis began during an American Airlines flight from Florida to Philadelphia in April. Norcross suddenly started shaking and asked a flight attendant for an antacid tablet. What seemed like a minor stomach issue was actually a gallbladder infection that had progressed to sepsis, a life-threatening condition.

Norcross, an electrician and union member before entering Congress, said he was "a whisper away from death." The experience has given him new perspective as Congress debates healthcare bills that could result in millions losing Medicaid coverage.

"It's great to be alive today," Norcross said after returning to Congress. He represents South Jersey and focuses on issues affecting working families, including wages and healthcare access.
