Four victims had been contacted from burner phones, and the FBI helped police connect most of these calls to cell towers within a 20-minute drive of Gilgo Beach. This evidence helped narrow the investigation to Heuermann.
Meanwhile, families of victims are pursuing legal action. Benjamin Torres filed a wrongful death lawsuit Monday in Suffolk County, seeking money that Heuermann's family members earned from participating in a Peacock documentary about the murders released in July.
This case has haunted Long Island for over a decade, with families waiting for answers about their missing loved ones. The guilty plea could finally bring closure to one of New York's most notorious unsolved murder cases.
