Ron Leshem Says 'Golden Age of Global Drama' Is Here Thanks to Indie TV

Ron Leshem made his bold prediction about television's future while speaking at Canneseries, a major TV festival in France. The writer and producer has serious credentials backing up his claim.
Leshem co-created the original Israeli version of Euphoria with Daniel Amsel. That show inspired Sam Levinson to create the HBO version starring Zendaya, which became the second most-watched series in HBO's history. He was also Oscar-nominated for the war film Beaufort.
At the festival, Leshem said there are many reasons why this era represents the peak of global TV drama. He specifically pointed to how independent productions are rescuing television, just like indie films saved cinema during previous creative slumps.
Leshem's latest project is Bad Boy, another coming-of-age series he created with Amsel. The show competed for Best Dramatic Series at the International Emmy Awards, showing how international content continues gaining recognition.
The Canneseries festival itself reflects this global TV boom, with managing director Benoît Louvet previously stating that the golden age of television is still ahead of us.
This matters because it shows how small, independent shows from other countries are changing what we watch on TV. Shows like Euphoria started overseas before becoming huge hits in America, giving viewers more diverse stories and perspectives.
