SiriusXM and iHeartMedia in merger talks to create radio giant
SiriusXM and iHeartMedia, the two biggest radio companies in America, are in early talks about merging. The deal would combine SiriusXM's 33 million satellite radio subscribers with iHeartMedia's 860+ broadcast stations that reach 250 million monthly listeners.
The nation's largest satellite radio company and biggest terrestrial radio network are exploring a merger that would reshape how Americans consume audio content.
SiriusXM Holdings, which has 33 million subscribers, is discussing acquiring iHeartMedia according to people familiar with the talks. iHeartMedia operates more than 860 broadcast radio stations across the country and claims to reach 250 million monthly listeners.
The combined company would control both traditional AM/FM radio and satellite radio, plus extensive podcast networks. iHeartMedia owns popular stations in major markets, while SiriusXM offers commercial-free music and exclusive content through satellite technology.
Both companies have faced challenges as streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music capture younger audiences. Radio listenership has declined as people shift to on-demand audio content and podcasts.
The talks are still in early stages and may not result in a deal. Investment firm Apollo and music executive Irving Azoff are reportedly advising on the potential merger.
This merger could create a massive audio empire controlling much of what Americans hear on the radio and in podcasts. It might affect radio programming choices, subscription prices, and competition in the audio entertainment market.
Watch for official announcements from both companies and regulatory review if a deal moves forward.
