SpaceX Bought Over 1,000 Cybertrucks as Tesla Sales Fall Short of Targets
SpaceX bought more than 1,000 Tesla Cybertrucks as the electric pickup truck struggles with weak sales. Tesla only sold about 60,000 Cybertrucks despite CEO Elon Musk's target of 250,000 to 500,000 trucks per year.
SpaceX purchased over 1,000 Tesla Cybertrucks in what appears to be an effort to prop up disappointing sales for the futuristic electric pickup truck.
Tesla has sold only about 60,000 Cybertrucks since production began in 2023, far below CEO Elon Musk's ambitious targets of 250,000 to 500,000 trucks annually. The company had over 1 million preorders in 2019, but only a small fraction converted to actual sales.
The bulk purchase by SpaceX, which Musk also owns, raises questions about whether Tesla is artificially inflating its sales numbers. Both companies are controlled by Musk, making the transaction essentially moving trucks between his own businesses.
The Cybertruck's angular design and high price point around $100,000 have limited its appeal to mainstream buyers. Production delays and quality issues have also hurt consumer confidence in the vehicle that was originally promised to cost much less.
This strategy of inter-company purchases could make Tesla's sales figures look stronger to investors than actual consumer demand would suggest.
The SpaceX purchase shows Tesla is using its sister company to boost disappointing sales numbers. This could mislead investors about real customer demand for the $100,000 electric truck that was supposed to revolutionize the pickup market.
Watch for Tesla's fourth quarter sales reports and whether similar company-to-company purchases continue boosting Cybertruck numbers.
