Transgender Adults Struggle to Find Medical Care as Restrictions Spread

Transgender adults are facing growing obstacles when trying to get medical care. State laws restricting gender-affirming treatments and new federal policies are making it harder for adults to access the care they need.

The problem goes beyond just finding treatment. About 3 in 10 transgender adults say they've had to teach their own doctors about transgender health issues. Some report that healthcare providers refuse to use their preferred gender identity and instead refer to the sex they were assigned at birth.

Geography makes things worse. Transgender people are more than twice as likely to travel over 50 miles for transition-related care compared to routine healthcare. While 11% travel long distances for regular medical visits, the number jumps much higher for specialized transgender care.

The restrictions affecting youth gender care are now spilling over to impact adults. As public support wavers and political pressure mounts, healthcare providers are becoming more cautious about treating transgender patients of any age.

For many transgender adults, the combination of legal restrictions, lack of trained doctors, and geographic barriers creates what advocates call a perfect storm of limited access to care.
