In a Truth Social post, Trump called Iran's blockage of the strait "WORLD EXTORTION" and said he had "instructed our Navy to seek and interdict every vessel in International Waters that has paid a toll to Iran." The president said the blockade will stop Iran from benefiting economically while the rest of the world suffers.
The Strait of Hormuz is a 21-mile-wide channel between Iran and Oman that serves as the only sea route from the Persian Gulf. About one-fifth of global oil shipments pass through daily, making it one of the world's most important trade routes.
Vice President Vance told reporters Sunday that "we have not reached an agreement" following the face-to-face talks with Iranian leaders and Pakistani negotiators. The failed negotiations came after Iran began charging fees for ships passing through the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway where about 20% of the world's oil passes through daily. A blockade could disrupt global oil supplies and drive up gas prices for American drivers.
