Urgent Care Clinics Start Offering Abortion Pills as Planned Parenthood Locations Close

When the only abortion clinic in Michigan's rural Upper Peninsula closed, a local urgent care clinic stepped in to offer abortion pills. The move is now being watched as a potential model for maintaining abortion access across the country.

Abortion clinics are closing nationwide, even in states where abortion remains legal. Many clinics are struggling financially because they're charging about half of what it actually costs to provide care, according to clinic operators.

The Feminist Women's Health Center, for example, has been operating at a loss. "Essentially, we are charging about half of what it costs to provide the care," said Jackson, a clinic operator. "Our ability to maintain payroll and our operating expenses on an ongoing basis was really strained."

The closures affect abortion access and put more pressure on abortion funds that help women pay for the procedure. When people can't afford care and don't have insurance, they turn to these funds for help.

The urgent care model could be particularly important in rural areas where women already travel long distances for healthcare. By offering medication abortion through urgent care centers, communities might maintain access even when dedicated clinics close.
