Youth suicide deaths dropped 11% after the U.S. launched the 988 national suicide and crisis hotline in July 2022. The decline prevented 4,372 deaths among people aged 15-34, according to a new study published in JAMA.
The biggest drops happened in states that actively promoted the 988 crisis line to residents. Researchers compared actual death rates to what they expected based on past trends.
Before 988, people in crisis had to call the longer National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number. The new three-digit system works like 911 but connects callers to mental health counselors instead of emergency responders.
The 988 hotline received over 5 million contacts in its first year. Counselors provide immediate support and can connect people to local mental health services.
Researchers studied suicide data from when the hotline launched through early 2024. They found the strongest results in the 15-34 age group, which has seen rising suicide rates in recent years.
This shows that mental health crisis support actually saves lives when it's easy to access. The three-digit number 988 is much simpler to remember than previous hotlines, making help available when people need it most.
Researchers will continue tracking suicide rates to see if the decline continues as more people learn about 988.
